Mr. Fleener founded David Fleener Architects, Inc. (DFA) in 2000 with a prescient focus on sustainable design. The design philosophy of DFA was a natural and logical outgrowth of the modernism founded and developed in Chicago over the last two centuries, further enriched by a sensitivity to the responsible use of natural resources, a minimal intrusion into the environment, and the ultimate comfort and well-being of the building occupants. As owner and President of DFA, Mr. Fleener managed all aspects of the practice, including design, construction administration, project management, business development, and office management. He has overseen the completion of an extensive array of project types and scopes, including single and multi-family residential, health care, hospitality, retail, commercial office, and historic preservation.
Following his graduation from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1980, Mr. Fleener worked for ten years with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in their Chicago, Manila, and Los Angeles offices. From 1987 to 2000 he worked with Dirk Lohan at Lohan Associates, where his experience as Project Designer included several corporate headquarters, including: Ameritech (AT&T) in Hoffman Estates, Illinois; Safety-Kleen in Elgin, Illinois; AmSouth Bancorporation in Hoover, Alabama; American General Life and Accident Insurance in Nashville, Tennessee; U.S. Department of Transportation in Kansas City, Missouri, and BP Amoco in Warrenville, Illinois. In 2015 the studio of David Fleener Architects joined ICL Architecture.
Mr. Fleener is a licensed architect in the State of Illinois; a City of Chicago Department of Buildings Self-Certified Professional; a City of Chicago Registered Energy Professional; and a LEED AP. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology (2005-2009) and at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (2011). His publications include contributions to the monographs “Myron Goldsmith: Buildings and Concepts” and “Dirk Lohan: Buildings and Projects of Lohan Associates” as well as articles in The Wall Street Journal, Interior Design, Hospitality Design, and Green Building and Design. His work is also featured in the book “International Fashion Wellness Space: Spa + Beauty + Salon”.
